Every day of the year, Sacred Heart Mission (SHM) assists hundreds of people who are experiencing homelessness or disadvantage to find shelter, food, care and support. We are in this for the long haul – we are committed to making a sustainable difference in people’s lives. Everyone is welcome at our table.
Since we opened our doors in 1982, we have been providing a range of innovative, relationship-based service responses which enable people to overcome disadvantages and realise their full potential.
We currently operate 13 op shops throughout Melbourne. We recycle goods and provide sustainable fashion stores, raising funds for people experiencing homelessness and providing and promoting an ethical shopping experience.

Are you a passionate individual with an eye for fashion, interior design or antiques and collectibles and want to work in a retail setting while also making a real difference in the lives of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our community? Then this is the perfect role for you!
We are now looking for dynamic new store assistants to join our expanding and growing team on a casual basis, with the opportunity to become permanent part-time.
You will be working with the Store Coordinator, Deputy Coordinator and other op shop staff in the day-to-day operations of the vibrant stores located in Bentleigh, Cheltenham, Elsternwick and East St Kilda and will contribute to bringing an excellent customer experience alive in our stores. Your day to day will include:
- Providing customers with a memorable in store experience
- Learning how to identify, sort and price designer and vintage wear, homewares, collectibles and antiques;
- Showcasing your visual merchandising skills and window display expertise;
- Assisting in maintaining a high standard of visual display in stores;
- Working with a supportive and passionate team;
- Maintaining an exceptional in store environment;
- Contribute to building a loyal customer base; and
- Effectively processing all transactions.
Our ideal candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible individual with demonstrated experience in an op shop, retail or hospitality environment. This role requires you to deliver a fun and memorable experience to a diverse range of customers and donors.
Working collaboratively with others is vital! To be successful, you will have a natural flair for making genuine connections and love nothing more than supporting those around you.
Please note: before commencing this role, you will need to complete a Criminal Records Check and provide a current COVID-19 vaccination certificate.
The perks of the job
You will receive a competitive hourly rate PLUS super. Our stores are open during normal business hours s (9:30 am – 6.00 pm). Penalties rates apply on Saturday and Sunday!
